James Arthur who was once dismissed as an artist who would never return has confounded his critics as his song ‘Say You Won’t Let Go’ has remained unmoved at the top of the UK singles chart for a second week. This week the song has 27,000 combined sales to give it the edge above the rest of the other songs. Despite having an overall low figure on combined sales, the signs are ‘Say You Won’t Let Go’ may outshine its rivals next week too.

Niall Horan provided the buzz for the top as One Direction member’s debut solo release ‘This Town’ entered the chart at No: 9 on the UK singles top 10 chart. The guitar led ballad is an acoustic track. Apart from Horan, three others are involved in the song writing credits. Horan has fallen short as against ex- 1D member Zayn Malik’s debut single ‘Pillowtalk’ which went straight to the No: 1 spot. On the other hand the pressure is on Malik as his follow up releases have been failures.

Another One Direction member is hard at work on his solo project. Liam Payne posted a photograph with Pharrell Williams in the studio in the US confirming that he was to follow in the footsteps of his band mates soon.

Rod Temperton who wrote two of Michael Jackson’s biggest hit songs ‘Rock With You’ and ‘Thriller’ has died at the age of 66 in London from cancer it was announced on October 5. He was a member of the British band Heatwave who had a huge hit called ‘Boogie Nights’ in 1977. Temperton went on to write several popular songs such as ‘Stomp’ and Light Up The Lights’ for the Brothers Johnson, ‘Give Me The Nights’ and ‘Love X Love’ for George Benson, ‘Love Is In Control’ for Donna Summer, ‘The Dude’ and ‘Razzmatazz’ for Quincy Jones, ‘Baby Come To Me’ for Patti Austin & James Ingram, ‘Yah Mo Be There’ for James Ingram & Michael McDonald.

With the Rolling Stones scheduling the release of their next album ‘Blues & Lonesome’ for December 2, it has become clear the legendary band could not write good songs for what would have been one containing new material as they have recruited Don Was as producer. Instead they opted for an album of blues covers. Eric Clapton is featured on the forthcoming album.

A recent poll conducted by the Classic Rock magazine to find out the most popular guitar solo has placed ‘Stairway To Heaven’ by Led Zepplin played by Jimmy Page at the very top. This is one of several such polls which have been conducted over the last few years.  The top 10 guitar solos are: 1. ‘Stairway To Heaven’ (Jimmy Page) – Led Zepplin 2. ‘Comfortably Numb’ (David Gilmour)- Pink Floyd 3.’Hotel California’ (Don Feldert & Joe Walsh) – Eagles  4. ‘Freebird’ (Allen Collins) – Lynard Skynard 5. ‘All Along The Watchtower’ (Jimi Hendrix) – Jimi Hendrix Experience 6. ‘Eruption’ (Eddie Van Halen) – Van Halen

7. ‘Killer Queen’ (Brian May) – Queen 8. ‘Sweet Child Of Mine’ (Slash) – Guns N Roses 9. ‘Purple Rain’ (Prince) – Prince & the Revolution 10. ‘Paranoid’ (Tony Iommi) – Black Sabbath.
