Eat street comes alive

‘Eat Street’ market concluded recently on World Children’s day. Due to this happy coincidence, organisers piled all their efforts in to making the day as family friendly as possible.

In addition to the ubiquitous food stalls and styles that one  finds at most Colombo markets there was an outdoor cinema, bang in the middle of Green Path. The massive screen dominated the area with an equally loud sound system that entertained young and old who sat on oversized bean bangs with a showing of the animated movie “Minions.” Next to this arena was a stall serving up popcorn from savoury to sweet and chilli to chocolate.

Nestled by the stage and at the furthest point of the market was a bouncy castle along with entertainers, dressed in furry costumes delighting the passers-by, on a hot and packed afternoon in Vihara Maha Devi Park. At the other end of the park was another event organised by the Municipal Council, attracting huge numbers. The atmosphere was jovial and pleasant.

The usual fare was on offer for the palette such as street burgers, tacos, Chinese dumplings, pooris and small bites. Endless amounts of confectionary stalls served up cupcakes, brownies, frozen yogurt and delicious sweets to satisfy those with a sugar graving. Not only catering for the gastronomes dotted along Green Path were young entrepreneurs and designers selling their items. With surprisingly and entire area selling electronics, selfie sticks to watches, car accessories to kids’ toys.

Arun Raj event manager and organiser said the event’s  main audience was for food lovers. With the evening deemed a success organisers hope to hold the market every three months.
