Ananda cruised through to an innings and ten-run win over Wesley in their Under-19 inter-school cricket encounter concluded at Campbell Park yesterday. Wesley was struggling for survival when play stopped for lunch on the second day — badly placed on 111 for 5. Even though some late resistance coming from the Wesley batsmen, they were unable to prevent Ananda from securing a massive win. Ananda continued their domination of day one when they posted a formidable score of 377 for 4 declared. For Ananda Sahan Suraweera (118) and Sammu Ashan (106) top scored. Ashan followed this feat with fine spell of off spin and bagged five scalps.

He was supported by Dileepa Jayalath who took three wickets as the duo combined to bowl out the home team for a score of 153. The Weslyites were all out for 153 and 214 in their bating turns.  Nalanda too recorded an outright win with an easy eight-wicket win against St. Mary’s Kegalle at Campbell Place. Nalanda scored 260 for 4 declared in their first innings. In replay to St. Mary’s scored of 126 and then followed it up 202 in their second innings.  Nalanda set a target 69 runs for victory had little difficulty in achieving it as they needed only 15.1 overs to romp victory by eight wickets.

S. Thomas’ after being shot out for 148 on day one and Mahinda sitting pretty on 132 for 1 thanks to right arm pacie Tehan Schaffter, fought back on day two in the match played Galle which ended in a first innings win for Mahinda. Ravindu Hansika starred for Mahinda with a sparkling knock of 91 and his team mate Kavindu Ediriweera claimed a match-bag of eight wickets, capturing four wickets each in both innings. The Thomians were 201-6 at close of play. Bhagya Dissanayake hit an unbeaten knock of 85, which came in the wrong phase of the game.  St. Peter’s too had to be satisfied with a first innings win against Isipathana in the match concluded at Bambalapitiya.

The Peterites was in a strong position when play ended on day one on 156 for 4 in reply to Isipathana’s 190. The second day saw Anishka Perera who was unbeaten on 50 going on to make an 80 while Ranmith Jayasena remained unbeaten on 42 helping them to end their innings with a score of 254. St. Peter’s had two half centurions — Anishka Perera and Manelka de Silva. Perera hit 80 and de Silva made 54. Jayasena continued his form from the first innings to hit an unbeaten knock of 42. At close of play Isipathana were 239 for 6 with Pathum Nissanka stroking 77. Nissanka, who became the first schoolboy cricketer to hit a double century this season, made 26 in the first innings and is in a healthy position to reach 500 runs in no time.
