Megapolis Minister and Jathika Hela Urumaya (JHU) secretary Patali Champika Ranawaka yesterday said his party was not against the abolition of the Executive Presidency, but opined that the country needed a strong electoral system to ensure a stable government.

Mr. Ranawaka speaking at the 13th Convention of the party held at the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium said there were rumours that the JHU was against the abolition of the Executive presidential system, but this was not correct.

He said the JHU always stood for a united country as opposed to federalism.  “The JHU is against that ideology not because of racism, but the fact that if the country is divided it would result in instability.

“An unstable country would result in blood shed like in Sudan, Libya, Syria and Iraq. That’s why we are against federalism,” he said.

He said that in the past the party stood firm even when people criticised its actions and views when they tried to
create a better Sri Lanka and made it a
reality.

He said the party is a practical party which worked for justice and a prosperous Sri Lanka.

He said the party was responsible for ending the 30- year war by advocating the notion that strong leadership was necessary to defeat terrorism.

Mr. Ranawaka said the party had always called for a joint government and now both major parties have come together to develop the country.

Ven Omalpe Sobitha Therasteps down as chairman

Ven Hedigalle Wimalasara Thera and Parliamentary Affairs and Mass Media Deputy Minister Dr Karunaratne Paranavithana were appointed co-chairmen of the party.

The appointments came after Ven Omalpe Sobitha Thera stepped down as chairman, a post he held for 13 years. He was appointed to the Supreme Advisory Council of the party.

“I am stepping down to allow others to lead. I am only leaving the leadership and I will always serve the nation through this party,” the Thera said.
