Speaker warns against canine sounds

It’s nearly six months since the draft of a Code of Conduct for MPs was circulated among lawmakers but it is yet to be adopted by the House.

In the meantime, the behaviour of some MPs has become increasingly unparliametary with some going as far as to make “canine sounds”. Speaker Karu Jayasuirya warned them this week that he would have to take stern action against those who continue to misbehave in the House. Much of the fracas among MPs was caused during a speech by Regional Development Minister Sarath Fonseka who resorted to name-calling not only against joint opposition MPs but also called one of his Cabinet colleagues a “naattami”.

The verbal exchanges got ugly, with some JO MPs also hurling abuses at the former Army Commander forcing Deputy Speaker Thilanga Sumathipala to call on the next speaker to take the floor.
