R. M. Nishanka Abeyrathna BFA, MFA, the first   student of the visual and performing arts who holds a degree in Carnatic music with first class honours will be  releasing several books on Carnatic music theory and history in Sinhalese language soon. Abeyrathna , a student of renowned teacher Dr . Arunthathy Sri Ranganathan,is the first Sinhalese student  who obtained a degree in Sri Lanka.

Having obtained a first class honours in BFA , he was granted a scholarship by the former Indian High Commissioner   Nirupama Sen to follow Masters in Hydrabad. After receiving his Masters in first class honours he joined the University of the Visual and Performing arts and pursuing on PHD and would complete in December.

Nishanka has published many books and attended seminars, conducted workshop and written many research articles on Carnatic music. He also has performed Carnatic music recitals in Sri Lanka and India.

The university of visual and performing arts started the Department of South Indian Music and Guru Dr. Arunthathy was pioneered in setting up the department. There is an urgent need for books on Carnatic music in Sinhalese language. Nishanka’s timely contribution will be useful to school students and under graduates attached to universities.  The books cover a wide range of details. SRF
