Nethmi Waduge could not make an impression

The 101st National Tennis Championship, continued to the final week with competitors dishing out fascinating tennis as Thisuri Molligoda outplayed Nethmi Waduge to clinch the Women’s Open title at the SLTA courts yesterday.

Molligoda beat Waduge 2-0 in straight sets as the competition reaches its final day, today. The highlights of the last week matches was the finals of, Girls Under-16 Doubles and the Doubes finals of Boys Under-14 and 18.

In the Girls Under-16 Doubles final, the experienced pair and top seeds, Anya Gunawardena and Janali Manamperi, defeated a talented duo of Anjalika Kurera and Neyara Weerawansa by 6-3, 0-6 10-7. Despite losing the second set, the winning duo came back fighting to clinch the deciding set with some powerful serving to rattle their younger opponents.

In the Boy’s Under-14 Doubles final, the duo of Ashen Silva and Vinuja Wijebandara made their way to clinch it, by prevailing over their counterparts Nelaka Dissanayake and Pesanjith Kannangara 7-6, 6-2. Then Kavindu Diluka paring with Archana Lokuge went onto win the Boys Under-18 doubles final in an impressive fashion. Despite losing the second set, both Diluka and Lokuge with powerful serving and overhead smashes, came on top to beat their counterparts Naadir Nazar and Aadavan Pushparaj by 6-2 ,2-6 and 10-8.

Top seeded Janali Manamperi went on to clinch the Girls Under-16 final beating Nethasha Munaweera 6-4,7-5. In the Boys Under-16 final, Vibuda Wijebandara made short work of opponent Ashen Silva to win the title 6-3, 6-2.
