Welder dies, son injured by collapsing temple overhang

A 50-year-old welder died and his son injured when an old concrete sun shade of a temple in the Kelaniya area, they were demolishing, collapsed on them, a Coroner’s court of inquiry was told.

Chief Incumbent of the temple, Ven. Middeniye Dharmasena Thera giving evidence before Additional City Coroner Irasha Deshani Samaraweera, said the deceased, was removing the final craft when the sun shade broke loose with the wall.

The duo was pulled out from the rubble and rushed to hospital, where the father was pronounced dead on admission.

Colombo JMO, Dr Shasini Mallwarachchi certified death was due to the collapse of a sun shade on the victim, resulting in critical injuries to the head.

SI Malisha Herath of the Peliyagoda Police led evidence.
