The Motor Traffic Department (MTD) will soon implement an e-Motoring project for motor vehicle registration and to issue drivers’ licences online, MTD sources revealed.  A senior MTD official said, the services provided to motorists by the department would be automated under the e-Motoring project. The MTD will offer facilities for Sri Lankans to submit their vehicle licence applications from their homes and pay the application fees using their mobile phones.  The department has made arrangements to issue driving licences via an online application process from the Provincial DMT branches without visiting the DMT head office in Colombo. With the introduction of the e-motoring service, applicants can obtain their driving licences within three days.

In addition, motorists can get valuation reports and fitness certificates for vehicles, he added.  Applicants will no longer need to visit Colombo to obtain these documents as they can access the service from their homes 24 hours.  The DMT provides this ICT solution to extend an effective and efficient delivery of selected services and the Provincial Motor Traffic Departments.  A web based solution will be evolved to handle official functions of the DMT such as registration of motor vehicles, issuing driving licences, transfer of ownership of motor vehicles and file Monitoring System / Document Management System, he disclosed.
