Internationally acclaimed Methodist College Choir is ready to beguile and entertain the masses once again. This time, their biennial concert “Resonance” will be held on June 10 and 11 at the Lionel Wendt Theatre at 7.30 P.M.

The Sunday Times caught up with Methodist College Choir leaders Erandi de Alwis Seneviratne and Adalia Ananthan. They share that the choral group decided to name this concert Resonance, because they want the music to resonate with the audience.

“We’ll be doing a Taylor Swift medley as well as The Beatles and gospel music among other numbers,” they say adding that the audience can expect an elaborate show with a mix of genres.

Choir director Sanjeev Jayaratnam who has been working with the Methodist College Choir for the past six years, is the driving force behind the group. His directing skills paired with the talented singers of the choral group took them to Vietnam in 2011, where they competed at the first Hoi An International Choir Festival and Competition. They won a gold diploma in the youth choir equal voices category and a silver medal in the open sacred music category.

Following this, their passion and talent took them to Guangzhou, China in 2012 for the Xinghai Prize International Choir Competition where they received a platinum award – the highest award received by a choir from Sri Lanka at an international level.

Sanjeev shares that he is inspired and motivated by seeing his choristers grow musically as well as mature into responsible individuals. He believes that the passion and hard work put in by the girls is what makes them stand out above the rest.

“What motivates all of us is the music. We all love making music. It’s a living art form. It’s all about communicating what the song means and the emotions,” he adds.

Choir leader Erandi says, “The choir thrives on communication, discipline and humility. We don’t allow the accolades to get into our heads. We strive to achieve, to stay grounded and humble. Singing is a lifestyle for us.”

She shares that being a part of the choir solidifies relationships and they always project positive energy. It has taught them how to balance schoolwork, family commitments and their extra curricular activities.

Choir leader Adalia adds, “we come as friends but leave as a family.”

Sanjeev tells us, this is a special concert because Methodist College celebrates their 150th anniversary this year.

“The choir is ready to entertain and I’m sure the audience will have a ball.”

Tickets priced at rupees 1500, 1000, 750 (reserved) and 500(balcony, unreserved)are available at the Methodist College office during school hours.
