After drawing criticism for its silence on the proposed Indo-Sri Lanka Economic and Technology Cooperation Agreement (ETCA), the Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) yesterday decided to revive a committee appointed to study the proposed agreement.
The decision was taken at the second council meeting presided by BASL President Geoffrey Alagaratnam PC.

During the meeting held at the H.W Jayawardene hall, members said that while professional organisations such as the Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) and the Organisation of Professional Associations (OPA) had issued statements, the BASL had been silent on this issue.

They said the Bar should not be silent at a time when a nationally important agreement was being negotiated. Expressing concerns over the proposed agreement, Hemantha Warnakulasuriya PC said the committee which was appointed earlier to study this agreement had not met since it was appointed.

He said the council, members of the Bar and the public should be informed about the decision of the BASL on this matter after carefully examining the contents of the agreement.
