Internal Medicine Specialists in Sri Lanka, commonly known as General Physicians, play a key role in delivering health care to the people. These Specialists are highly-trained and provide a range of non-surgical health-care to adults who are suffering from difficult, serious or unusual medical problems. In most institutions, medical emergencies are initially managed by Internal Medicine Specialists.

It is in this light that the Internal Medicine Specialists from around the country gathered in Kandy recently to form the first-ever Sri Lankan Society of Internal Medicine (SLSIM).

The SLSIM’s objectives include bringing all Internal Medicine Specialists in Sri Lanka under one umbrella, playing an active role in educating the public on the prevention of diabetes, hypertension, ischaemic heart disease and stroke and updating the knowledge of health-care personnel.

The SLSIM is planning to hold its first annual academic sessions in March next year.

The following office-bearers were elected at the recent meeting.

Founder President: Senior Consultant Physician Dr. Wasantha Dissanayake; Vice President: Dr. Rohitha Jayamaha; Joint Secretaries: Dr. Suranga Manilgama & Dr. Maduwanthi Hettiarachchi; Treasurer: Dr. Shamali Abeygunawardena.

The SLSIM has appointed representatives for all districts.
