UNP MP allegedly assaults spectator

A spectator was assaulted yesterday allegedly by UNP Parliamentarian Harashana Rajakaruna and persons accompanying him during the Royal-Thomian 50 over Cricket match at the R. Premadasa Stadium, an eyewitness said. He said the incident took place after the spectator taunted the MP, saying the ‘Yahapalanaya’ (good governance) was not going on well.

The spectator suffered injuries to his face and was later taken to the National Hospital for treatment. When contacted, Mr. Rajakaruna denied he was involved in the attack. ”I noticed some fighting taking place, but I was not involved in the incident. I was just passing that way. Such clashes are common at matches so I continued enjoying the match,” he told the Sunday Times.

A hospital spokesman last night said the victim was receiving treatment in ward No 72. An officer at the Hospital Police Post said they were yet to receive a complaint about the incident.
