No one cares for safety

Use of mobile phones while driving or riding is an offence, but often ignored by most motorists... until caught like the man in our pic

By their appalling disregard for road rules and lack of common sense Sri Lankans are needlessly putting their lives and the lives of others at great risk on a daily basis.

Some do not think twice about hanging precariously from the footboard of moving vehicles, despite the clear risk of death or injury. Yet some others cannot be bothered to use the overhead bridges to cross railway lines to get to adjoining platforms at railway stations.

Use of mobile phone by drivers and motorcyclists is illegal. But this law is often observed in the breach until one is caught. Meanwhile the driver of the vehicle pictured transporting children in an open vehicle without any safety precautions is putting all of his passengers at risk.

Motorcyclists, traveling on  one-way roads, often cannot be bothered to to turn at places set apart for this purpose, and instead blatantly violate the law and using the pedestrian crossing as a short cut to reach their destination.

Why take all these risks? Think first.

This mini-truck transporting young people is virtually a death trap

Vendors at railway stations seldom bother to keep to the rules. This young man seems blissfully obliviousl of the danger to which he is exposing himself

Travelling on the footboards of buses and trains are banned, but the law remains a dead letter especially during rush hour

No one told this poor man that the pedestrian crossing is for pedestrians not motorists
