Can individuals make money safely and legitimately on the Internet? The answer, according to Guru.lk is yes, and Sri Lanka’s leading edutainment website has launched an online course to teach how.  Available at just Rs 10 per day, ‘How to do Online Jobs’ shows how any skilled person with imagination can market himself or herself on the Internet and earn additional income by freelancing for online jobs without falling prey to the many scams that abound, the website said in a media release.

Guru.lk has partnered with content partner Maya Creations to develop this online course in Sinhala, and noted that more than 2,000 followers registered for the course within the first 15 days of its launch on February 1. Commenting on the product, Sanjaya Elvitigala, CEO of Maya Creations, said: “We are teaching something that we have practised over a period of time. Worldwide, thousands of buyers of services, be it IT, photography, video editing or data entry, are looking to offshore their work to save costs. Sri Lanka with a talented workforce should make use of this opportunity. As a country we should encourage and embrace such technology which will directly impact income levels of individuals and households while contributing to the GDP of the country”.

Hasitha Dela, CEO of Headstart (Pvt) Ltd., the owner of Guru.lk added: “We are very happy indeed to be able to teach youth and professionals alike how to identify and circumvent the scams and benefit from the earning opportunities with whatever talent they have.” He said Sri Lanka is estimated to have earned US$ 400 million from IT based services in 2011, and has a vision to achieve US$ 4-5 billion by 2022. “Currently, most of this revenue comes from BPO and KPO industries, and many Sri Lankan companies have also ventured out. However, the informal sector, where individuals or groups of individuals register with online job platforms to provide services, is a growing trend but lack of knowledge is holding Sri Lankans back.”
