The Public Service Commission (PSC) last week called on all suitable officers in the education sector to sit for a competitive exam to fill 515 vacancies in Class III of the Sri Lanka Education Administrative Service (SLEAS). But this has placed many teachers and principals in a dilemma.

The Ceylon Teachers’ Union (CTU) claims that the limited competitive exam for recruitment to Class III of SLEAS 2015/2016, under the new service minute, has placed many candidates in doubt with regard to their eligibility.

CTU General Secretary, Joseph Stalin said the new SLEAS Minute of 21.08.2015 allows candidates to sit only three times. However, he said that according to the previous service minute, a candidate could sit the exam up to seven times.

He said the teachers and principals who have already sat the exam three times or more, are querying as to their eligibility to sit the exam under the new minute.

It is learnt that, with the closing date on February 1, the doubtful candidates are seeking clarification from the Education Ministry to apply for the exam.

Mr Stalin said that, although written submissions have been made to the line ministry regarding the issue no response has been received. Each year, around 20,000 candidates sit the exam.
