New Year resolution: Work more and earn more

View(s):

It seems our country is going from bad to worse with respect to development programmes, agriculture and in many other fields. Most of our food items are not nutritious enough. Many people are not ready to commit to their duties and responsibilities. We even outsource our laundry.

As a result, it is not a surprise that the cost of living keeps going up and the people complaining about it. People should resolve to live on their income without imitating others.  When a person falls sick he has to take a lot of medicine. Even for a mild sickness, one goes to a doctor and this costs, in some cases, several thousand rupees.

In the past, when a villager fell sick, he went to the native doctor in the village. The native physician who did not have any modern medical equipment would check the pulse of the patient and prescribed the medicine. This was effective.
Today even for a mild stomachache, people don’t take easily available home medicines such as ginger, lemon, pepper or coriander.

In the past, people use to eat rice with ‘kiri hodda’, which, if prepared with the required spices, was good medicine for many ailments.  In those days, people survived on rice with kiri hodda and worked in their paddy fields for ten or twelve hours, and they even aswaddumised – transform abandoned/fallow lands to new paddy fields and cultivated chenas.

They toiled in the burning sun. Their health did not suffer because they did not eat meat. They lived a long and ailment-free life. Those who live a luxurious life have lost the benefits of simple diets. Today it is difficult to find a man without cancer, kidney diseases, blood sugar, high cholesterol or other ailments. Many people rarely walk nowadays. Even for a short distance, they hire a vehicle or a tuk-tuk and then they go to the gymnasium. For every household chore, people use machines. Our lives now depend on machines.

Today parents do what their children want while children do not do what their parents want. It is the responsibility of elders to take control of their families. The breakfast in the past was largely milk porridge, kola kenda and lunu kenda. But today the breakfast has become a heavy one and even dinner, for many people.

Lord Buddha has preached that health is the greatest gift. Now the time has come to take that advice to mind. Today when a man reaches forty or fifty, they have to undergo surgery to find the causes of sicknesses. Watch your health would be a good New Year resolution.

In the New Year 2016 people who are employed will get an increase in their salary. If the employer is protected the employee is in turn, protected. We can take water from the well only if there is a clear source of water in to it. When the fountains are dried out no water is available. Therefore employees should consider their employer as that source of water and resolve to protect him.

In the New Yea, public and private sector workers should take upon themselves the responsibility to prevent their institutions or companies from incurring losses. Workers need to give their maximum service for their salary. Many traders always think of their profit and act with the aim of increasing it. Some traders charge unreasonably high prices. They buy 10 string hoppers for Rs. 10 but sell them for Rs. 60. Consumers should reject such traders. Consumers should not hesitate to boycott traders who sell vegetable, fruits, meals and other items at high prices.

Many businessmen do not pay their employees’ ETF and EPF contributions. In such workplaces, employees should stand up for their rights. We say this not to harm the businesses, but to persuade such employers to think of producers, consumers and their employees. It is my fervent wish the New Year will be a prosperous time for all.
