Most professionals in their respective fields come from poor families, said the Vice Chancellor of the University of Peradeniya Prof. Upul Bandara Dissanayake, the chief guest at the annual prize giving of Mahamaya Girls College, Kandy at the school auditorium recently.

He reiterated that Abdul Kalam, Sir Ivor Jennings, Gunapala Malalasekera were some of the professionals who came from needy families. The Vice Chancellor further stated that one can lose wealth but not knowledge gained from education. Prof. Dhammika Dissanayake, his wife also accompanied him. Sakuni Weeraratne was selected as the best all-round student. She is eligible to enter Law College.

The Principle of Mahamaya College Indra Withanachchi received the guests and introduced them to the staff members and she submitted the Annual Report in her welcome speech. Deputy Principal Visakha Herath forwarded the names of the prize winners. Senior Prefect Dulmini Deegahawatura proposed the vote of thanks.

The Guest of Honour was former Dharmapala cricket captain and President of the Kandy District Cricket Association, Provincial Councilor Central Province Thilina Tennekoon. Over 450 students received prizes for general proficiency, Buddhism, Sinhala Language, Mathematics, Science, English, Physical Education, Eastern Music, Geography, Information and Media technology, Hindu language, French etc. These prizes were awarded to Grade 6 to 13 students.

Ten students who got high marks at the Grade 5 scholarship examination were also rewarded. 26 students who got 7 D’s and 77 students who got 9 D’s at the GCE O/L were awarded prizes. Senior class students received 19 scholarship prizes. 20 Art students also got prizes and 17 students from the Commerce stream. 25 students got prizes for Mathematics and 29 students were awarded special prizes.
