The 63rd National Badminton Championship, Sri Lanka’s annual flagship event for which shuttlers are looking forward to compete for honours will be staged out of its traditional locations Colombo/Nawalapitiya to the sacred city of Anuradhapura for the first time. The tournament is scheduled to be worked-off from October 22 to 27 at the Anuradhapura Urban Council Courts and the newly built Mike Cooke Badminton Stadium.

This year’s Nationals will be played on a new format in three main segments – Province, School and Club or Company in which the main idea is to provide a novel experience to all players who will compete in the National Championship to bring honour to him/her, province, school, club or company.

In the earlier occasions Badminton Nationals were played on an individual basis where a single player compete for his own glory but in the new format, a player will take an interest for himself as well as for the side he or she represents. In the new initiative all players reaching quarter-finals upwards will contribute achievement points to their respective team they represent. The province, school or club receiving the highest points will emerge victorious in their respective category and will be awarded the Title Championship. The individual with the highest aggregate will declare as the National champion.

A total number of sixteen events will be worked-off at the championship in Men’s and Women’s Singles (Open), Men’s and Women’s Singles (Over 35), Men’s and Women’s Veterans Singles (Over 40), Masters Singles (Over 50), Masters Singles (Over 55), Men’s and Women’s Doubles (Open), Mixed Doubles (Open), Men’s and Women’s Veterans Doubles (Over 40), Masters Doubles (Over 50), Masters Doubles (Over 55) and Mixed Doubles (Over 40).

Points will be awarded as follows: Champion – 5 points, Runner-up – 4 points, Semi-Finals 3 points, Quarter-Finals 2 points and Pre-Quarter Finals 1 point. The draw will be done through an Electronic Draw System this year according to the IBF Regulations. Within 48 hours of closing entries. The list of entries with names of each event will be available on SLBA Website www.srilankabadminton
