A three-year-old boy died in an accident on Wednesday (9) when the vehicle he was traveling in collided with a container truck, a coroner’s court heard. The deceased, the only child of a medical officer from Matale, was travelling from Kataragama with his family when the accident took place in the Kuruwita area in Ratnapura.

The father of the deceased 38-year-old Niroshan de Silva said that while they were travelling, a 68 foot long container truck struck their vehicle from behind. The child and his injured mother were rushed to the ICU of the Ratnapura General Hospital and the child was transferred to the Colombo National Hospital the following day where he died.

“We were coming back home from Kataragama along the Kuruwita highway when the container truck crashed into our van. My wife and child were severely injured. I was sitting in the middle of the vehicle and did not sustain any injuries,” Mr. Silva said.
The police confirmed that the child was occupying the rear seat of the van when the two vehicles collided. The Judicial Medical Officer (JMO) of the Colombo National Hospital concluded that the child died of head injuries and profuse bleeding.
Meanwhile the Colombo City Coroner ordered the Kuruwita Police to remand the container driver and produce him in courts.
