The United Socialist Party (USP) is the only leftist party in the south to recognise the right of Tamil self-determination, USP Colombo District leader Srinath Perera says proudly. The party’s General Secretary, Srithunga Jayasuriya, is contesting in the Jaffna electorate with the party declaring its platform is based on the principles of combating racial hatred, capitalism, and sensationalised war victory.

The USP says the two main major parties have failed to solve national problems because of their capitalist ideologies and by trying to gain the vote bank of the Sinhala masses through falsehoods.

“Fake leftist parties like the People’s Liberation Front (JVP) have abandoned their ideologies and principles and now they are taking their manifestos to the Mahanayakes for blessing,” Mr. Perera added.

“They also deny the Tamil people’s right to self-determination and separation which is their democratic right,” he said. The USP is the Sri Lanka section of the Committee for a Workers’ International (CWI), a worldwide union grouping advocating for workers’ rights.

Mr. Perera said the elections could not be considered free and fair. “Nowadays every successful candidate has to spend at least Rs. 40 million to be elected to parliament. We don’t have the financial strength to campaign like that. We are taking our policies and ideologies to the people directly, who live in the villages and cities,” he said.

The USP is fielding candidates in Jaffna, Colombo, Kegalle, and Kandy.
