5 Killed, 20 injured as drivers lose control of their vehicles

Five persons were killed and 20 injured in two accidents reported from Anuradhapura and Udawalawe areas yesterday.
One person was killed and four injured when a van driven by the Chief Inspector of Anuradhapura Police allegedly ran over them near Rambewa Maha Vidyalaya, last afternoon.

The victims were supporters of Parliamentary election candidate Duminda Dissanayake, police said.The Police officer was on his way to an inquiry with a team of Police officials when lost control of the vehicle and met with the accident.

The officer surrendered himself to the Police.Meanwhile, four people were killed and 16 injured when a lorry toppled near the Habrala Aara Bridge along the Thanamlvila-Udawalawe Road, last morning.

The mishap killed three women and one man between the ages of 30 and 60.The injured were immediately admitted to the Udawalawe area hospital, from where, those who were in critical condition were transferred to Embilipitiya Base Hospital.

Police stated that the van had toppled into the water near the bridge after it had hit a tree nearby.
Police said they suspect the driver had fallen asleep at the wheel, at the time of the accident.
