Schoolgirls dominated in the Women’s events at the All Island Mid Year Carrom Novices championships organised and conducted by the Carrom Federation of Sri Lanka worked off at the Carrom Federation Headquarters, Maharagama.

It is a good sign for the future of the game in Sri Lanka that schoolchildren taking part in this sort of tournaments and to show their skills signaling that once the veteran top rankers call it a day, there will be enough talents to fill their voids. These youngsters exhibited high quality slice work which gave the seniors a tough time in matching with them.

In the Women’s Doubles segment it looked like an inter school confrontation where three girls schools from Nugegoda Anula Vidyalaya, Mahamaya Vidyalaya and Samudra Devi Balika Vidyalaya battling for supremacy from the semi-finals onwards. Tharushi Himahansika partnered by Tasmila Kavindi of Mahamaya, Nugegoda proved their worthiness in becoming champs defeating Anulians Minsadi Laknara and Vinuki Seniduni in the finals 2-0.

In the Men’s singles Ishan Kannangara will meet Pramedha in the first semi-final while Shanaka Nadeesha billed to battle with Lahiru Eshan in second semi-final to book a berth in the finals.

The four semi-finalists had to use all their experience and skills to defeat their opponents as all four games went to the deciding third sets.
