Seevali MMV the joint champions with Vidyartha at the meet held last year in fact went step ahead and in winning the championship they secured three gold’s, two silver and two bronze medals.

Nugawela Central came out as the second best with two gold and one bronze medal while Pallebowela MV a school which took the sport recently took the third spot with two gold medals.

The meet also saw the participation of 30 young boxers from the Northern Province where boxing was introduced only one year ago. Their first appearance in a major school boxing meet was no doubt an encouraging debut for them.

They did themselves proud as two of their boxers S. Jivanth of Hartley College Jaffna and J. Jenson of Puthukkudiyirippu Central bagged gold medals in the Youth 17-18 years 49-52kgs and 60-64kgs bouts.

Meanwhile Mihran Fernando from the host Mahanama who took the gold medal in the 52-56kgs bout was adjudged the best boxer while his opponent H.P.P. Kalpage of Seevali MMV Ratnapura took the best losers’ award.

The L.V. Jayaweera Memorial boxing meet was conducted by the Sri Lanka Schools Boxing Association, organized by the Old Boys Association of Mahanama Colombo and sponsored by MAS Holdings saw the participation of over 400 boxers from over 80 schools around the island.
