In the world of business, being social and outgoing are priced above all else. In this context being an introvert can be quite a challenge. Contrary to popular belief being “shy” is not the same as being “introverted”. An introvert is energised by spendig time alone as opposed to extroverts who thrive on social interaction. This article highlights some of the unique abilities of introverts that need to be celebrated and encouraged.

They keep the balance

Balance and diverse perspectives are vital for the success of your organization. There is a good chance that your workplace is already filled with extroverts. These people are typically loud, confident, people-persons who typically do well in interviews and get hired. However, a mix of both types of people will ensure your company is truly balanced out.

They are better listeners

Introverts are excellent listeners. Before forming their own opinions, they tend to carefully listen to each side of an issue, making them informed resources and great decision makers. They can be great interviewers as they tend to ask strategic, useful questions. They really listen to their customers, which makes the customer feel that their needs were top priority.

They are better prepared

They are often incredibly organized and great at managing their time. These qualities are ideal for making schedules, planning budgets, managing a human resources department or even leadership roles. They spend time thinking through their goals and preparing for questions, which gives them an edge.

They write more

Strong writing skills usually lead to clear thinking and communication.

Although they may not speak up very often, introverts are usually very capable, effective writers. This comfort with the written word helps these work place wallflowers better articulate their positions and document their actions. It also helps them leverage online social networking tools such as Twitter, creating new opportunities to be out there with employees, customers, and other stakeholders. Most business cultures favour extroverts but introverts are just as important. These are the people who will surprise you with their outside-the-box problem-solving abilities, excellent written communicationskills and a quest for productivity.
