The Education Ministry is to disperse Rs 450 million among 351 National schools, next week, said Education Minister Akila Viraj Kariyawasam.
The funds are for both Development and Maintenance of individual schools, and allocated to each school according to its student numbers and requirements.

“We want to stop schools from collecting money from pupils, and have already sent circulars to ensure it does not happen. To ensure that the schools have sufficient funds to function we are sending this money,” he said.

The schools requiring funds have been categorised into three groups. Group I will receive Rs1,000 per student, Group II will receive Rs 500 per student and Group III Rs. 300.

The Ministry is also exploring possible reforms within the Education sector, focusing on the main competitive exams. The committee for this will be headed by the Chairman of the National Institute of Education.

“We are looking at making exams less stressful for students. Right now students face a lot of pressure, starting from the Scholarship exams. We want to see how this could be changed,” he said.

The ministry is also exploring the possibility of providing at least one free meal to each primary school student, the minister said.
