The surrender of the main suspect in the murder of the Ratgama Pradeshiya Sabha chairman may have helped the Police to complete investigations, but residents say this is no indication that they are safe from criminal gangs terrorising the Meetiyagoda area. Arumadura Janith Madusanka de Silva alias ‘Podi Lassie’ the man who allegedly gunned down PS Chairman Manoj Mendis on March 23 surrendered to the Magistrate’s court this week.

The gang led by him, after killing the chairman, had shot at two of his friends also. But another friend of the PS chairman had attacked one of the killers with a glass bottle, inflicting grievous injuries on him. Police said they believed the murder was a revenge killing, because the victim was alleged to have killed the father of one of the killers.

The Meetiyagoda police division where the killing took place has witnessed a string of murders over the past few years and most of the suspects had surrendered to the Kalutara Magistrate’s court. Residents say a reign of terror still prevails in the area and they live in fear.
