The Institute of Business Process Outsourcing (IBPO), one of the first of its kind in Sri Lanka, is currently training 29 students in customer care, finance and back office services, a part of its entry-level curriculum, according to National Youth Corps(NYC) Chairman/ Director Nalinda Ilangakoon. The IBPO was established jointly by the NYC and Sri Lanka’s Ministry of Youth Affairs and Skills Development in August 2014.
Further, he also noted that the “IBPO recruited its first batch from the trainees at National Youth Corps by offering them the full scholarship”.
Additionally, Mr. Ilangakoon also signalled that the organisation also wants to “introduce internationally recognised BPO courses for the specialist and managerial levels in the future”.

He also stated that, while based in Colombo, there were plans to “expand this institute to rural areas in the future. This will enable youth in all parts of the country to join the BPO industry”.

Currently, the IBPO has been certified by the US-based BPO certification Institute (BCI) that “offers 18 internationally recognised certifications (HCMS21 and BGSQ12 frameworks) for the BPO industry”.

Additionally, commenting on the institute’s staff, he indicated that its complement of “14 local instructors were trained under five international recognised instructors who are specialised in the BPO industry. A special workshop was organised under the supervision of BCI. All the trainers must undergo this special training to obtain the HCMS21 and BGSQ12 standards”.

Mr. Ilangakoon also revealed that “most renowned BPO companies have agreed to recruit all our trainees from the first batch. Lack of well-trained individuals is the major issue prevailing in the BPO industry. Since IBPO provide technical knowledge for customer care, back office and finance aspects, it is easy for the BPO companies to recruit and train them within a short period of time”
