Nearly 1,800 graduates are to be short-listed for recruitment as teachers in Western Province (WP) schools, WP Education Secretary M.A.B. Daya Senarath told Education Times.

The Examinations Dept will conduct a test for the applicants to be selected as teachers above the primary section, he said.

“On an average, 600 teachers retire annually, and those short-listed will be recruited as and when vacancies occur,” he said.
Mr Senarath said that, in 2011, a similar exam was held and teachers short-listed and recruited accordingly.

“This scheme will enable us ensure there is no shortage of teachers and education in schools continue uninterrupted,” he said.
He said there was a shortage of teachers for Psychical Training (PT) and Arts, but needed to be recruited from Education colleges. (DW)
