Two thousand more students will be admitted into campuses next year, the Higher Education Ministry has decided.

Ministry Secretary, Dr Sunil Navaratne told Education Times that this was in keeping with a proposal by President Mahinda Rajapaksa to increase the student intake.

He said that, accordingly, some 26,000 students will be enrolled, as against the 24,000 in the last batch.

“We have created new Degree programmes such as Aviation and Oil and Gas Exploration,” he said.

He said that, other courses too have been expanded to accommodate more students, in keeping with the proposal.

He said that, in order to accommodate the increased intake, hostel facilities will be expanded and more universities set up.
Under these plans, Rajarata University will be combined with the Vavuniya and Trincomalee campuses.
“The three campuses on Native Medicine will also be upgraded to universities,” he said. (DW)
