More than 15 million voters will be eligible to vote at the Presidential election on January 8, a senior official of the Elections Department said yesterday. According to the latest figures compiled this week 15,044,490 people have been registered as voters — 292,322 more than the number of voters registered in 2013.

At the last Presidential election in 2010, the number of registered voters was about 14 million. President Mahinda Rajapaksa obtained around six million votes (57.88 per cent) while his opponent Sarath Fonseka got around 4.1 million (40.15 per cent) votes.
