Kenny G’s smooth sounds on the saxophone at Nelum Pokuna
View(s):Ever since the news that Kenneth Bruce Gorelick, better known to his fans the world over as Kenny G, was coming to Sri Lanka, his fans have been on a high. The incessant rains Colombo has experienced this past few weeks, have however, been a dampener, and determined not to entertain any more anxiety, the presenters of the show Fairway Holdings and organisers Wizcraft have decided to move the smooth jazz saxophonist’s one-off concert on November 15 from the Royal College Sports Complex to the Nelum Pokuna Theatre.
The Grammy winning saxophonist rocketed to fame with his fourth album, Duotones in 1986. Mainly playing the soprano saxophone, the star whose caressing melodies have made him the world’s best selling instrumental musician, also plays the alto and tenor saxophone.
The accolades are too numerous to list, suffice to say, he won a Grammy Award for best instrumental composition in 1993, for “Forever in Love” and was named the Number One jazz artist of the 1980s. Kenny G’s best selling tracks like ‘Songbird’, Forever in Love’ , ‘Silhouette’, ‘The Moment’ and ‘Going Home’ to name just a few, coupled with his great communication skills (he’s known to descend from the stage to walk and play among his audience) have made the man who started off as a back-up musician in Seattle, a legend in the industry.
His packed current tour sees him head to Bangkok, Thailand and Johannesburg, South Africa following his Colombo concert.
