Eight pianists in a musical potpourri
View(s):“An Evening of Musical Potpourri”, presented by the “UniKeys” -University Piano Ensemble of the Western Music Department at the University of Visual & Performing Arts (UVPA), will be held on Sunday, November 16 at 7 p.m. at the Russian Cultural Centre Auditorium, Colombo 7. The show is directed by Dr. Priyeshni Peiris Perera, a Senior Lecturer in Western Music at the University of Visual & Performing Arts.
The Four Piano Ensemble with eight pianists will be showcased at this event for the first time in Sri Lanka. The programme features a musical potpourri of works by the major composers such as Bach, Beethoven, and Mozart as well as selections from Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker Suite, combined with an array of popular contemporary selections.
The UniKeys University Piano Ensemble was founded by Dr. Priyeshni Peiris Perera in 2011, when it was announced that 20 Chang digital pianos had been donated to the UVPA by the Korean Embassy of Sri Lanka. This resulted in the implementation of a “Piano Lab” which enabled opportunities for group piano learning and teaching; a popular concept practised in the American music education system. This resulted in forming the UniKeys University Piano Ensemble.
The UniKeys will feature Sasankha Alahakoon, Nirmani Godamunna, Roshani Premaratne, Meadha Rajakaruna, Amali Abeynayake, Pavithra Madapatha, Manisha Abeysingpathirana, Udara Kariyapperuma and Ruchira Jayasinghe. Special guest appearances by the Prestantia Chorale and the Prestantia Piano Trio will be featured in collaboration with the Prestantia Music School, directed by Dr. Priyeshni Perera.
