The Chitrasena Vajira Dance Foundation will present Nrityagram, the international Odissi dance sensation from India in Colombo.
Following the highly successful tour of Samhara – a collaboration with the Chitrasena Dance Company, Nrityagram will perform two shows, Ś”Sriya”ḥ and their newest production, “Songs of Love and Longing” at the Lionel Wendt. Performances will be on November 7 and 8.

All proceeds from the Nrityagram performance will go towards the Chitrasena Vajira Dance Foundation – Endowment Fund Campaign, the newest initiative embarked on by the Chitrasena Vajira Dance Foundation. The Nrityagram Dance Ensemble is regarded as one of the foremost dance companies of India and has performed extensively around the globe.  Although steeped in and dedicated to ancient practice, Nrityagram dancers are also involved in carrying Indian dance into the twenty-first century.

“Sriya”, on November 7, choreographed by Surupa Sen, depicts ancient wisdom, sacred rituals, divine transformation; unveiled and interpreted in electrifying dance. Watch and you might witness a sacred transfiguration: from stage to temple, from woman to goddess. It is a selection of works created over a decade. ŚSriyaḥ is set to an original score composed by Pt. Raghunath Panigrahi.

On Saturday, November 8 will be Nrityagram’s “Songs of Love and Longing”. Also choreographed by Surupa Sen, the highly acclaimed duo, Surupa Sen and Bijayni Satpathy performs solos and duets drawing from the Gita Govinda, a 12th century ballad of immortal love. Through the compelling physicality of Odissi, the dancers lead the audience on a transcendent journey.

Tickets are priced at Rs. 5,000, Rs. 4,000, Rs. 3,000, Rs. 2,000, Rs.1, 000 and Rs.500 (balcony) and can be purchased at www.ticketslk.com, Sarasavi Bookshop – Nugegoda & Maharagama, Tickets Tickets Office – Colombo 3, Sadeepa Bookshop – Borella, Yamaha Music Centre – Colombo 7, Abans main showroom – Colombo 3, Vanapetha Bookshop – Dehiwala, Chitrasena School of Dance, 444 on Dialog and 365 on Etisalat.
