Vidyartha College Kandy emerged champions at the 97th Schools Stubbs Shield Boxing Meet which concluded at the Sugathadasa Stadium recently.

Vidyartha was way ahead as they pushed the defending champions Vidyarathana University College Horana to the second slot by accumulating 42 points as against to the 20 secured by Vidyarathana while Royal Colombo who tied with Gamini Central Ingiriya with 12 points took the third spot as they had won more medals.

Vidyartha apart from winning the Stubbs Shield had the honour of producing the best boxer of the meet in W.A.I. Sanjaya who won the 46-49kg bout defeating A.K. Maduranga of Vidyarathana Horana who took the best losers’ award.

S.M.K.S. Bandara of Nawalapitiya MMV was awarded a special award for the best boxer presented to schools who took the sport recently.

The 97th Schools Stubbs Shield conducted over four days saw over 140 schools participating from nearly 60 schools around the island. The chief guest at the closing ceremony was renowned Sri Lanka boxer Manju Wanniarachchi who gave away the awards. – MSA
