To honour Prof. Ediriweera Sarachchandra’s birth centenary, the Department of Fine Arts and the Department of Classical Languages of the University of Peradeniya are presenting two plays- Subha and Lokanthara.

Subha directed by Kanchuka Dharmasiri with music by Manoj Alawathukotuwa and Vinusha Wijewickrema is the story of a young girl who cannot speak. The play explores silence and sound, stillness and movement and unites the genres of theatre and video. It illustrates how women’s issues in South Asia societies often go unheard.

Subha will be staged on September 17 at 7 p.m. at the E.O.E. Pereira Theatre, University of Peradeniya and again in Colombo at the Punchi Theatre on the 21st at 3.30 p.m. and 6.30 p.m.

A play about the living, the dead and the undead, Lokanthara is directed by Muditha Dharmasiri, with a script by the Renascor Theatre Ensemble and music by Pamuditha Manelanga. The tragicomedy blends Greek theatre concepts with Sinhala lyrics.

Lokantha will be staged first at the E.O.E. Pereira Theatre on September 18 at 7 p.m. and on the 20th at Colombo’s Punchi Theatre at 3.30 and 6.30 p.m.
