Nihonbashi, Dharshan Munidasa’s Japanese restaurant at Galle Face Terrace has made it to the “Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants” list once again, for the second year running.

In the presence of culinary royals like Joel Robuchon and David Thompson who were present at Capella, Singapore for the award ceremony, Nihonbashi was awarded the best restaurant in Sri Lanka as well as ranked the 44th best restaurant in Asia. It was one of the eight Japanese restaurants awarded at the function.

Among the other countries receiving recognition, China won 16 awards, India six, Japan 10, Singapore eight and Thailand five. Indonesia, Sri Lanka Taiwan and South Korea won one award each.

“Being named one of Asia’s best restaurants for the second consecutive year is a great honour for us as it is a very competitive and demanding list for a region with a diverse culinary heritage. We will strive to continue our journey and improve our ranking next year,” said Dharshan at a press briefing..

This list, fast becoming one of most prestigious, is created by The Diners Club, World’s 50 Restaurants Academy, an influential group with over 900 leaders in this industry. The academy comprises around 26 separate regions around the world which then again is made up of 36 members with a chairperson. The members are established chefs, restaurateurs and highly regarded ‘foodies’ and each have seven votes used in making the list.

This is the second award for the season for Nihonbashi which earlier won an award for spreading Japanese culture in Sri Lanka from the Japanese embassy.
