LTM requests funds for a home for mentally afflicted former patients

View(s):

In Sri Lanka the mentally afflicted are discriminated against. Even once they are cured or have their illness under control, the stigma stays with them and their families are not willing to take them back.

Is there anyone who cares?

A project of the administration at Mulleriyawa Teaching Mental Hospital is to build or rent a six-roomed house for six residents, all former patients who are now either cured or medically able to manage their illness. The house will be situated outside the hospital premises and will function without a nurse.

The residents will run the home, take care of most expenses and be engaged in jobs. All this with the idea of showing their relatives that they are an asset rather than a burden, so that, it is hoped, they will be accepted back into their families.

A young couple of the “Love Them Ministry” (LTM) will be overseeing the house.

The annual budget is Rs. 250,800, which LTM has put aside for the first year.

The Administration will meet the cost of repairs that may be needed. All equipment required for the house has already been donated.
The Administration will provide the land and the building will cost approximately Rs. 50 Lakhs. The LTM is intensifying their efforts to build a house and is requesting kind donors for any assistance towards this worthy cause. Cheques should be addressed to “NIMH Angoda” and posted to Mrs. Neiliya Roberts, honorary Treasurer, LTM, 43/11 R, Pepiliyana Mawatha, Kohuwela.

An official receipt will be sent by the Director, National Institute of Mental Health.

This is an approved charity and a claim on income tax can be made.

For more details please contact Mrs. Karin Ramachandra, member of the LTM team – tel no.: 2583293 or Lilanthi Fernando on 2583293 or 0722969455.
