A string of development projects in Colombo, initiated by the Urban Development Authority (UDA), is under way, with some of them already under construction, while others are ready for launch.

UDA Chairman Nimal Perera told the Sunday Times that the projects include mixed developments that will have hotels, apartments, shopping complexes and a floating market.

He said that some of them will be developed with foreign investments, and others with local funding.

He said that some of the projects will help ease congestion within Colombo city. One such project is the Gold Centre at Reclamation Road, where most of the jewellery shops at Sea Street will be relocated to.

“All lands on Sea Street sold by the State will be re-acquired,” he said.

He said the Gold Centre will have banking facilities, car parks, restaurants and a Gem and Jewellery Authority shop too.

He said that the old Gafoor Building in Fort will be developed as a city hotel, with 63 rooms, while Grand Oriental Hotel will be renovated in three stages and upgraded to a 5-star hotel.

The Chalmers Granaries land opposite the Fort Railway station will have a luxury shopping complex funded by a Dubai company.
A floating market will be set up on the Beria Lake, while some of the shops will be on the banks of the lake.
