Our trip to Polonnaruwa

View(s):

It was the Christmas vacation. My father proposed to go on a trip. We decided to go to Polonnaruwa. We were all happy and prepared necessary things for the trip.
Our aunty and Mahappa also  consented to join us. So there were 13 happy members in our group.

First we went to the ruined city of Polonnaruwa. We visited the museum and the information centre. From there we proceeded to the ‘inner city.’ We saw the ruins of the palaces of kings, Vijayabahu, Parakramabahu and Nissankamalla. Our Mahappa told us that those three kings were the patriots of Polonnaruwa Kingdom. They saved our country from Chola rule and improved agriculture,  religion and culture.

We had our lunch on the bank of the Parakrama Samudraya.  We learnt that it is the largest reservoir and it was built by  King Parakramabahu. We saw the huge statue of  King Parakramabahu on the bank of the Parakrama Samudraya.

We saw many ruins and remnants of monasteries, temples and  viharas. We saw the excavations done in Alahana Pirivena, which was a seat of education for local and foreign bikkhus. On the following day we returned home with a happy memory of great things done by our fore-fathers.
