A late burst by Matara City strikers guided them to a thrilling 2-1 win against Police Sports Club and a place in the quarter-final of the Cargills Food City FA Cup after their pre-quarterfinal battle played at the City Football League in Colombo yesterday. Matara City, who was also prolific in the concluded Dialog Champions League 2013, became the first team to reach the quarterfinals despite trailing 0-1 at halftime.
Police SC dominated from the first whistle, playing a well balanced game with superb defending as well as a strong attack. Striker Rajitha Jayavilal struck a goal in the 32nd minute, which eventually became their solitary goal in the game.
Matara City regrouped to come out with a powerful display after the turnaround, not allowing the Cops to consolidate as they did in the first session. A.W. Ranasinghe struck the equaliser for Matara City in the 73rd minute as they became stronger after that. Matara City took hold of the grip of the battle nine minutes later when Nigerian striker W. Kawabina scored the crucial goal for the winners.
