UNP leader Ranil Wickremesinghe yesterday asked party members to roll up their sleeves, end their differences and unite to fight the Rajapaksa regime. “Let us roll back our sleeves and move forward till we oust this regime,” the UNP leader told cheering crowds who gathered at the UNP headquarters Sirikotha in Kotte yesterday.

He said that it has been four years since the war was won but the present time is harder for the people than it was during the war.

“People don’t have jobs and the education sector is down. Only one percent of the population is living comfortably and the people are asking for a means of living,” he said while addressing the Party’s 55th annual convention.

He said that since 2006 till now the national debt has increased by 4.8 trillion rupees. “The national debt for 55 years was only 1.8 trillion rupees and now it has increased to 6.6. This is because the Rajapaksa regime is getting a commission of 30 per cent on all loans,” he said.

Mr. Wickremesinghe added that by 2014 the UNP will come into power and change the current situation in the country by gathering all who are opposing the present government. Former Party Chairman,MP Jayawickrema Perera who spoke at the function said that he will give his full support to bring in a UNP government and said party members will have to get together for a better future in the country.

“A time has come to us to unite on behalf of the people and our party. We should bring in a UNP government again,” he said.

Meanwhile MP Rosy Senanayake also speaking at the event said that the Government has overloaded the country with debt which the general public has to pay back. She further said that through the resolutions the UNP will work to improve different sectors such as health and education.

“The number of students who failed the O/L Mathematics paper was 57 per cent in 2009 and the English paper 63 per cent. In 2011 44 per cent of the students failed the Mathematics paper. We talk about technology but we haven’t even set the foundation to this,” she said adding that 350, 000 students are admitted to the primary level but out of that only 20, 000 get into higher education institutes and this should change.

She said that the Government has failed to introduce a system to aid the students who fail to get into these institutes.MP Senanayake called upon UNP member Sajith Premadasa to work with the party leaders and help bring back a UNP government.
