Kilinochchi’s District Secretary Rupavathi Kethishwaran has protested to Public Administration Minister John Seneviratne, alleging interference by a presidential coordinator in land administrative matters in the district.

Her protest followed the coordinator’s visit to her office. She said the official wanted her to give a decision in favour of a person who had forcibly occupied a land that belongs to former Eastern Provincial Council member A. Sasitharan.Ms. Kethishwaran told the Sunday Times she had ordered the coordinator to leave the office without interfering in administrative work.

She said that following the protest, Minister Seneviratne had wanted a complaint sent in writing to take further action. The minister, she said, had directed that no outsiders should be allowed to interfere in administrative matters.

The District Secretary said that on previous occasions, too, the presidential coordinator had tried to interfere in administrative matters. In a related development, the Divisional Secretary has lodged a complaint at the Kilinochchi Police station, claiming that attempts to survey the land of the ex-provincial council member has been blocked by the person occupying the land. The Divisional Secretary and the Land officer had visited the land to implement an order by the Lands Ministry.

However, the Sunday Times learns the police have so far not acted on the complaint.
