Postal authorities in Kandy are investigating allegations that the postal stamp franking machine of the Kandy Post Office was taken out of the office to dispatch propaganda material during the recently concluded Central Provincial Council election.

The authorities also investigated whether a leftist political party had leaked the news of the incident. The leftist party is understood to have denied the allegation.
According to initial reports the postal stamp franking machine had been taken away from the post office to a residence of a political party candidate, who had used it to send his election propaganda material.

The investigation officer is reported to have recorded a statement of a political party official attached to the Kandy post office.Deputy Post Master General of the Central Province Ranjith Ranasinghe, said the postal authorities were investigating as to whether the machine had been taken away from the post office, with the knowledge of officials.

He added it was next to impossible to take the department’s franking machine without prior approval or knowledge of officials. (LB)
