‘Entertainment and Broadcasting Law for Sri Lanka’ by Chanakya Jayadeva was launched on October 31 at the JAIC Hilton Union Ballroom at 6.30 p.m. The first of its kind in Sri Lanka, the book explores the legal aspects of the entertainment and broadcasting industries, covering a gamut of issues -the different branches of law dealing with film, music, publishing and intellectual property.

Among the special guests present at the launch Attorney General, Palitha Fernando also one of Chanakya’s former law lecturers felt that this was a topic important to the general public in many ways. “Though it is at a slow pace, Sri Lanka is now moving a step forward with global requirements,” he said. The AG stressed the need for Sri Lanka to be part of the global network as this field of law is one that cannot be developed in isolation.

Renowned Sri Lankan film director Chandran Rutnam took the audience behind the scenes in film making, a field which requires an immense amount of legal expertise. Thus he felt that this book did not cater only to those in the legal field but also provided the legal know how to film makers, publishers and artistes.

Chanakya’s research is based on the entertainment and broadcasting law of the United States.  Nihal Jayamanne PC described it as “timely for everyone” as it focuses on entertainment rights;, contracts and even has a chapter dedicated to ‘New Media’ extending to social networking and the internet. In his own words, it clearly “opens up new frontiers”.

The book is available at all Lake House Bookshops.
