According to the regulations, the sound of a vehicle horn should not exceed 105 decibels from a distance of two metres and 93 decibels from a distance of seven metres.

He said that in most of the vehicles which had violated the regulations, the drivers had fitted two horns or fitted extra powerful horns.

The drivers were ordered to readjust the horn and report back to the police while their driving licences were retained, the Sunday Times learns. An official said that in future the offenders will be taken to courts which could slap a fine of between Rs 3,000 and Rs. 5,000 on offenders.

Dr. Alahapperuma said the public response for the action being taken was positive and encouraging.
He said the checks would continue and they hoped to carry out checks in the outstations as well.
