Sepak Takraw is an acrobatic game similar to volleyball but played with feet, head and body without the use of hands. The sport is to be introduced at the SAARC Games in Kathmandu, Nepal 2014.

In this regard extensive talks had taken place between Presidents of Sepak Takraw Federations, Associations, member countries of SASTAF namely India , Pakistan , Nepal , Bangladesh and Sri Lanka on the sidelines of the 28th Kings Cup Sepal Takraw World Cup Championships held in the Udon Thani Province in Thailand .

As a prelude to the event India had proposed to stage one or two competitions to popularise the game amongst the public and also give an impression to Government leaders and apprise them of the necessity of the sport to be included at the SAARC Games.

Nepal had volunteered to stage the first of the rehearsal games in Kathmandu in April 2014, whilst Sri Lanka had proposed to stage the Women’s Competition in Sri Lanka during the planned Women’s Championship of the Association to be held in the latter part of March 2014.The Ex-Co. of the of the Amateur Sepal Takraw Association, according to Honorary Secretary M. Jaldin has tentatively accepted the proposal made by the President and would endeavour to make it a reality.

According to Jaldin the first step in that direction would be to affiliate the Sepak Takraw Association with the Ministry of Sports no sooner the President of the Association Nizam Hajireen, a double international in

rugby and football, who is down to undergo major surgery on his left-knee, an injury sustained during his sports career, returns to the Association’s fold after recovery from the operation fixed for November 3.

Jaldin also says that they had the opportunity to meet the Director General of Sports Ms. Ranjani Jayakody as regards the Association’s affiliation. She had assured her fullest co-operation to register the Association when the officials met her to invite her as the Chief Guest of the last Sepak Takraw Nationals held in May this year.

The move augurs well for Sepak Takraw in Sri Lanka with the added glory of the Sri Lanka women’s team winning the Bronze Medal at the 28th Kings Cup in Thailand .
