Himasha showed that he has not lost his touch despite his absence from the track and in the process eclipsed the existing record of 10.73 secs which was set by top sprinter Shehan Ambepitiya of Gateway International College Rajagiriya five years ago in 2008.
This was among the eight records which were set on day two which brought the tally of new records established to 13 in the two days of the Sir John Tarbet Senior Athletics Championship.

The other seven records set for the day comprised five in the track and two in the field events with four in the boys and three in the girls’ categories. The four records in the track events were in the Boys Under-20 5000m Race Walking where S.C. Bangamuwage of Makandura Central finished with a timing of 23.52.90 secs to eclipse the record of his school mate M.G. Shubashana which was 25.05.05 established last year.

Two new records were established in the boys 400m hurdles events with Harsha Chathuranga of St. Peter’s Bambalapitiya ending with a new timing of 53.35 secs in the Under-18 category to better the record of 55.02 secs by Lahiru Prasanjith of Taxila Central set last year.

But Lahiru Prasanjith made amends by setting a new record in the Under 20 category of the same event with record timing of 53.77 secs to eclipse the record of 53.95 set by N.H. Seneviratne of Joseph Wennappuwa in 2009.

The other two track records came in the girls’ category in the 400m hurdles and 800m which was both in the Under 20 age group. In the 400m hurdles event H.G.C.L. Hettigama of Sumana Balika MV Ratnapura recorded a new time of 1.02.67secs to better the record the record of her school mate M.N. Kalupahana which was 1.03.24 set way back in 2006 while in the 800m J.M.N.U.K. Jayasundara of A. Ratnayake Central Walala ran off with a new record of 2.14.95 bettering the existing record of 2.15.9 set by Nelum Kularatne of Elapatha MMV Ratnapura.

The field records set for the day came in the Girls Under-18 Triple Jump with Vidusha Lakshani of Newstead Girls’ College Negombo jumping away to a new record of 11.82m to eclipse the record of 11.67m set by P.V.D. Priyadharshana of St. Thomas Girls School Matara in 2007.

The other record was in the Boys Under-20 Pole Vault event where M.H.I. Sandaruwan of A. Ratnayake Central Walala broke his own record of 4.20m which he did last year with a new record of 4.50m.
