A Sri Lankan entrepreneur based in Australia, hard on the heels of the new era of incentive travel and ‘enjoying an experience’, is organising the ‘Miris Trail’ – a culinary tour of the island for just eight couples. It is not enjoying lunu miris or kochchi miris in the real sense of the word but Sonali Peiris, director and founder of ‘Miris’, an organisation that produces a range of gourmet Sri Lankan condiments, says “this tour is designed for the gourmet traveller and is an evolution of the experience that I have tried to create with my range of products.”

The luxury culinary tour of Sri Lanka combines the ‘joy of cooking with the pleasure of luxury travel’, according to an official statement by the organisers. Miris Trails’ inaugural tour to Sri Lanka is from 2nd to 16th September and involves some of Sri Lanka’s best chefs who will conduct six days of cooking classes at exotic locations across the island.

“Each class will be preceded by an accompanied visit to the local market so as to pick up the fresh produce, meat and seafood for the day’s class. This immersive cooking experience is complemented by a tour package that allows the participants the freedom to explore and experience Sri Lanka at their own leisure,” Ms. Peiris said, adding that each couple will have their their own car and chauffeur for the duration of the tour.

The Miris Trails will take the group to Galle (Jetwing Lighthouse), Nuwara Eliya (Heritance Tea Factory), Sigiriya (Jetwing Vil Uyana/Cinnamon Lodge), Trincomalee (Jungle Beach Resort), Negombo (Jetwing Beach) and Colombo (Cinnamon Grand). An English speaking chauffeur will be on call for each couple and the tour itinerary is designed to allow the travellers to explore Sri Lanka at their own pace.

Staff at the Uga Escapades-owned Jungle Beach resort in Trincomalee is excitedly preparing for the tour. “Our Chef de Cuisine, Vichalya Antonio Fernando will be personally conducting the class. He will be teaching the guests our signature Lagoon crab dish and Sago Pudding.

We are planning on having some local fishermen to bring the seafood, including the crab to our beach from where the guests can hand pick the items they like,” noted Ashan Wijewickrema, Marketing Manager at Uga Escapades Pvt Ltd.

Ms. Peiris said she is personally accompanying “my customers on this tour and I want them to come away with an enduring experience, as I have on my visits to this beautiful island”.
