The Association of Professional Sri Lankans in UK (APSL-UK) recently presented awards to Sri Lankan entrepreneurs of a variety of green products based on a recent competition in Colombo.

The “Green Energy Ideas (GEIs) into Green Energy Products (GEPs)” competition was organized with the assistance of the National Science Foundation (NSF). Fifteen projects were submitted in the competition and four winners and three runners-up were selected.
The winning projects were Ranrasa Products: Food drying and packaging centres round the country; Hemp (Pan) Industry Centres; Duru- Maduru: Mosquito repellent from betel leaves and solar energy; and Gliricidia project: for liquid manure from leaves and power generation from sticks.

The three runners-up were cottage industry using Vetakolu fibres; sustainable city development: bio-gas project; and milk production centres: for food and manure production and job creation round the country. The winners received a cash prize, certificate and a trophy. The 500-strong association is geared to contribute to the development of Sri Lanka through Sri Lankan expatriates living in the UK.
